Vitamin B-12 What Is It All About?

WHY B12 IS SO IMPORTANT

B12 is an essential vitamin. Everyone needs it to stay healthy. B12 helps your body work properly. It protects your nerve cells so they can grow the right way. B12 also helps make red blood cells, which give oxygen to the tissues in your body.

THERE ARE MANY CAUSES FOR B12 DEFICIENCY

A low amount of B12 in the body could be due to dietary restrictions, a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle, medical conditions that affect the digestive system, or proton pump inhibitors to treat acid reflux. B12 deficiency could also be caused by a health condition, such as Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, celiac disease, or HIV/AIDS.

Talk to your doctor about being screened for B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency has a wide range of non-specific symptoms. Symptoms may include:

Numbness, tingling in hands, legs, and/or feet
Fatigue
Shaky movements
Poor memory/confusion
Loss of balance
Trouble walking

B-12 injections are the most effective treatment for B-12 deficiency due to limited absorption from the intestines when taken orally.  Nasal and sublingual (under the tongue) routes are also effective and are available with a prescription in most cases.  Discuss your Vitamin B-12 needs with your health provider.  For consultation or more information contact Baldwin OBGYN 251-424-1100.
